LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Homelessness and drug addiction can significantly impact small business owners and homeowners in certain areas, which led a local inventor to create a deterrent for unwanted visitors.
At a building in Santa Monica, Stephen McMahon developed the Blue Chirper, designed to make his garage uncomfortable for those looking to use drugs. The device combines blue flashing lights, known to keep people awake, with the sound of crickets to discourage loitering. Triggered by motion, the Blue Chirper has proven effective, quickly driving people away.
Though the Santa Monica Police don’t have an official stance, they acknowledge that the concept, which gives the impression of being monitored, can change behavior. The device is now being developed for wider use near homes and businesses.
“We’re not solving the problem, but we’re directing people away from our property,” McMahon said.
